The Second World War was the defining period of our parents' lives, as it was for many Europeans born in the early 20-st Century.
Unlike many members of their extended family, they managed to survive the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, from 10 May 1940 to 5 May 1945.
Their survival was engineered largely by Mr. A. N. (Nino) Kotting and his colleague Jaap van Proosdij. What he did for our family is briefly described in English(pdf) and in Dutch(pdf).
For these actions Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Israel, declared Nino Kotting, posthumously, a 'Righteous among the Nations'. His sons received the corresponding Certificate of Honor and medal in a solemn meeting held in the historic Portugese Synagogue in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
